My Bloody Valentine 3D (2009)

Genre: Horror/Thriller

Running time: 102mins

Rating: 3/5

With 3D movies becoming more mainstream by being integrated into normal cinemas, this had to be the next movie to review. Now I am short sighted so I wear glasses usually when watching a movie, so with the added 3D glasses on top of my normal glasses it was initially a bit irritating, that soon went away when the effects starting pouring in. As the movie starts you see the generic names of the actors and crew that worked on the movie but with a twist, they are floating right in front of you. Everyone in the cinema let out a unanimous ‘ooo-ahhh’ of first impressions of the 3D. My Bloody Valentine is a remake of the 1981 slasher movie by the same title. Six miners are trapped in a mine following a cave in, when rescue arrives five are dead with pick axe wounds, one survived (Harry Warden) but remained in a coma. Warden awakes one year later on Valentine’s Day with a vengeance and goes on a killing spree, the cops then killed him or had they? Ten years later a copy cat or Warden is back, as pick axe killings start appearing around town. The story line is quite poor to be honest, but what makes up for it are the insane 3D effects. Pick axes come flying towards you, explosions roar past you and you feel like you are right there amongst the chaos. If this film didn’t have the 3D effects it would have definitely received a lower rating than what it did. In saying that the movie wasn’t really bad, it just wasn’t that great either. I would recommend this movie just to see the 3D effects if anything.

Hitch (2005)

Genre: Comedy

Running time: 118mins

Rating: 4/5

I thought I better review a ‘chick flick’ this time round, given that many of our readers will be female! Most ‘click flicks’ that I watch (not by choice) I usually don’t enjoy, this movie is an exception to that rule. Alex Hitchens (Will Smith) is a date doctor, his job is to get men to behave in a certain way to land the woman of their dreams. Hitchens meets Sara Melas (Eva Mendes) while falling for her, unknown to Hitchens, Melas finds out what he truly does for a job; flipping out in the progress. One of the best scenes in the movie would be when, Hitchens picks up a woman in a bar by treating her as a bar tender (giving her money and demanding two coronas), she walks away from the guys crowding her and Hitchens has her all to himself. The comedy within the movie is great, and guys can definitely relate to some of the scenes. Given that this is a ‘chick flick’, I did take this into account when rating it so overall it’s a 4/5. On an end note: guys if you are at the video store and your girlfriend wants you to choose a movie and it has to be a ‘chick flick’ get Hitch.
