OMG! Presidents’ Column Issue 7

OMG, I can’t believe the Ball sold out in one day!!! What an awesome response. Remember to watch this space to see what (if anything) we are going to do for those of you who missed out…

As some of you may or may not know, Bill English announced that the National Government will not be increasing the tertiary sectors funding.

I wonder if you also know what sort of influence there are on you or the University from this.

I am rather concerned like many other student leaders that the repercussions will be detrimental and will have a negative influence on our society’s future.

Students like many people are suffering great hardship. The trends have proven to us that people are returning back to study and that there is a shortage with funding already. The government should look to investing money back into education and see education as a way to invest in our society’s future. Funding education is a great way to fund New Zealand’s infrastructure and assure that we as a society is kept educated and remain competitive with other countries.

At the moment I am looking to see what our University is planning to do to help themselves through these pressures. Instead of attacking the university, we need to work with the University to see if we can help them win the argument with the government or find a solution that will work without the detriment to the students of their quality in education. Funny enough the Australian Government recently increased their tertiary education budget by A$2.6 billion, the National Party has obviously shown an apparent disinterest in our education and we need to let them know how important it is for our countries future.

Let me know what you think and I will see what we can do for you.

With exams just around the corner, I wish you all the best. I’m sure your results will reflect your time and effort. For those of you, who are struggling, go get some help. Most importantly it’s now that you all need to start concentrating for your exams.
