Anyone with a remote interest in modern New Zealand music would have heard of P Money. A well respected DJ and producer, he has previously worked with musicians such as Akon and Scribe and is set to headline major music event ‘Pure’ at Orientation here at Massey. With his single ‘everything’ ripping up the charts last year, and his new track ‘ Angels’ set to perform in a similar fashion, Analiese Jackson interrupted P-Money’s lunch to find out more about the man behind the music..
Analiese : So, congratulations on your single ‘Everything’ going platinum. What was your reaction when you heard the news?
P-Money: Well, it’s not something that happens instantly. You watch the sales grow, and once they hit 15,000, which is a great number, then it’s certified platinum, so it was really fun to watch the people respond to the song and go out and buy it. I was very pleasantly surprised with the whole release.
Analiese: That’s fantastic! So where did the idea for a collaboration with Vince Harder come from?
P-Money: I met Vince in relatively recent times. Around about a year ago my friend put me onto his music. My friend had heard him on Myspace, he’d somehow found his page and so we did a bit of research on him. He’d done a bit of stage stuff, did The Lion King in Australia and did the X Factor; all these things in Australia, but nothing in New Zealand. So when he returned back to NZ I just dropped him a line and was like “hey man, I like you sound, I like your voice, maybe we could get together and share some music and talk and stuff”, and so we did that. We ended up writing a few songs, and we’ve written more stuff since then, because obviously Everything was a huge success so we’ve been continuing to work together
Analiese: Where did the idea for the video clip come from, ‘cos I reckon it’s really neat…
P-Money: Yeah, it’s not a bad video, it’s been a really big talking point. You know, a lot of people were really impressed with the video and some of them were very confused, actually, with what it’s all about. My friend, Rebecca Gin, she’s a director, and myself kinda sat down and worked out what we were gonna do. She came up with the idea of the people sitting on our shoulders with that whole visual gimmick and also what it means. What it means is that it represents the music that you’re listening to or the music that you carry around as part of us when you’re a big fan of music, so that’s kinda what it’s all about…
Analiese: Where did the inspiration for Angels come from? Because it’s very different from ‘Everything’…it’s a very varied sound…
P-Money: Yeah, it’s way different to Everything. It’s a lot darker, a little bit faster.
