Cellphones Disrupting Classes

First it was movie theatres, then it was prisons and now it appears that lectures are being affected by peoples’ inability to either turn-of or, at the very least, find the vibrate setting on their cellphones. Social networking through texting is particularly disruptive when a student’s cellphone suddenly starts ringing in the middle of a lecture prompting a rise in complaints being fielded by the ASA Advocacy Coordinator, Penny Lyall. “A lot of students are getting irritated by the fact that students are providing constant distraction in class and when you pay a lot for your degree and can’t hear the lecture, it can be pretty frustrating. ASA fully supports a hard line by lecturers, but it is basic consideration – if you absolutely must take a call – get up and leave the lecture. It is not OK to engage in social texting in class. Everyone has a right to learn and not be distracted.”
