Movie Review: Fame

Fame, the movie

Rating: 3/5

You might remember Fame, the original movie. Based on the television program, Fame of the 1980s was really a breakthrough in movie history. It showcased problems within society including forbidden love and abortions, which during the 1980s wasn’t shown a lot on television.

After the dust having settled and the film finished making money, slowly having faded away, a genius decided it would be time to re-make it.

Back in bright lights, Fame 2009 has been recently released to cinemas, and fans young and old have rushed into cinemas, hoping to reignite their love of such a wonderful movie. Sadly this Fame has been a let-down to the past.

A consensus from reviews on site Rotten Tomatoes says Fame is ultimately undone by its choppy editing, its incomplete characterizations, and its apparent desire to appeal to the High School Musical generation.”

Overall that was the movie in a nutshell. A high school musical makeover of a musical classic clearly makes this remake unsuccessful, although I must give credit to the amazing dancing throughout the movie, this doesn’t bring the movie standard up, just pushes it into the high school musical category.

Don’t even get me started on the non-existent storyline, rather than following one or two main characters, four whole school years were pushed into a one hour forty seven minute music video.

Also, the music from the original Fame manages to slip in two minor songs, right at the end, with the memorable Fame song, featuring once, in the credits. The other songs featured, highly unmemorable, I can’t even remember any of the songs. Unlike other musicals where one song is stuck in your head days after the movie, luckily these songs aren’t even memorable enough to stay in your head as you walk out of the cinema.

Fame 2009 won’t live forever or light up the sky like a flame I’d rather not remember its name.
